Engagement is Within and Around All of Us, Everywhere, All of the Time.

It seems like a lot of people talk about our world as one of profound disconnection wheree disengaged people must be motivated, woke up, or pushed into doing things for themselves and others. The Personal Engagement Institute challenges this idea that seems so fundamental. Drawing on the 35-year career of Adam F.C. Fletcher, we introduce the Heartspace Model™, our process that shows how engagement is not a performance we must achieve, but an inherent reality we must recognize.

The End of the Myth of Apathy

At the core of the Heartspace Model™ is the Principle of Engagement, the belief that everyone, everywhere is already deeply and irrevocably engaged with things of all kinds, right now. We define engagement as any “lasting connection” in our lives—bonds that resonate across multiple parts of our mind, body, heart, and spirit—that extend beyond any immediate moment we’re in.

When anyone label a person “disengaged,” we are often merely observing that their engagement does not align with our expectations. A teenager “wasting time” on a video game may be forging deep global connections; a neighbor skipping a meeting may be profoundly engaged in caregiving. Our model relies on Adam’s concept of Heartspace, which is the universal field of these existing connections. We embrace an abundance mindset to recognize the inherent dignity in every person’s current focus by moving away from scarcity thinking that says engagement is finite.

Tools for Engagement

The Heartspace Model™ is built with several tools with the Compass of Personal Engagement as its primary navigational tool. Unlike traditional outreach that focuses on engaging others, our methodology demands a journey inward. We believe that self-awareness is the most powerful tool for social change.

Our methodology guides individuals through the Ladder of Engagement that guides to the difference between fleeting awareness and the profound, sustained impact of engagement. It also helps us embrace the Heartspace Capacities™, which allowing anyone to see their core values clearly, and the Cycle of Engagement that gives us our internal bearings as well as helping us navigate the world around us. As the philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti noted, one must understand the “whole of life,” a sentiment that anchors our approach to holistic self-discovery.

Our Practice: Moving from Self to Society

In practice, the Heartspace Model™ transforms individuals and organizations from being a connection missionaries into curious explorers. Our work is not about “fixing” the world; as Joseph Campbell famously suggested, our job is to “straighten out our own lives.”

Our practice is characterized by several key strategies:

  • The Cycle of Engagement: A continuous loop of listening, validating, authorizing, acting, and reflecting.
  • The Bridge to Community: Recognizing that personal engagement naturally ripples outward, creating a “Collective Heartspace” that drives systemic change.
  • Reflective Capacities: We foster specific internal traits—such as humility, passion, and “amazement”—to sustain engagement through the inevitable challenges of social action.

By mastering our internal compass, we stop trying to “force” others into our world and instead live with an authenticity that naturally “pulls” the world toward us. This is the essence of the Heartspace Model™: Changing the world by first reclaiming the power of our own lived connections.
