Personal Engagement

Ourselves: Personal engagement happens anytime we choose the same things over and over again, either on purpose or by accident. Our choices and activities begin within ourselves, and happen with or without other peoples’ approvals. Sometimes they’re big and sometimes, small. Some of the things we can become engaged in within ourselves include the stories we tell ourselves about who we are, our emotional patterns, the personal rituals we have, our inner standards and boundaries, the curiosities and daydreaming we do, and our coping mechanisms. These aren’t inherently good or bad; they just are. Exploring personal engagement means uncovering who we are and accepting that as a starting point for the rest of our lives.

Social Engagement

Our World: Our social engagements happen throughout the larger world, and happen whenever our personal engagement bumps into other people. These may be activities, ideas, wisdom and feelings we all share, and include everything from sharing a meal with family and friends to volunteering at an animal shelter, doing our work with pride, going to school everyday, participating in community groups, or other regular, repeated activities with other people.

Universal Engagement

Interdependence at Work: Positioned between all of us all of the time, universal engagement is the way our sustained connections are shared within or outside ourselves with everyone else, everywhere else, all of the time. They happen through the mundane and the dramatic, in minute and micro-level ways that we might see and understand very quickly. Very big, very macro-level universal engagement happens, too. It happens by passing a stranger smoothly on a sidewalk, brewing coffee for the next person, sharing a heavy sigh in a waiting room, picking up neighborhood litter, writing open-source encyclopedia articles for Wikipedia, mourning a cultural icon together with millions of people, and generations tending a single community garden. It can happen in other ways, too.
